FURMAN VICTORY By GH’EAT SCORE PURPLE HURRICANE DRIVES NEWBERRY BACK Indians Unable to Stop Baptists Either Through Line or Around Ends Greenville, Oct. In a game not so devoid of. thrills and high spots as the score would indicate, Furman university overwhelmed the Newberry Indians here this afternoon, 63 to o. Presenting shifted lineup as a re, suit of the absence of two regulars the Purple Hurricane had little trouble in plowing through the Newberry eleven again and again for long gains. Furman’s goal line was never in dan ger, although the Indians stiffened in the second quarter and put up a fairly classy offensive. All of Fur mans touchdowns, with the exception Of three, were the result of line plunges and end runs. Two of them were made by Nelson, sub right end, who recovered fumbles in the third and fourth quarters and ran 25 yards for his first touchdown and 40 yards for his second. He picked up the bali in the last quarter when the Newberry center passed the ball to Referee Jack Black instead Of an Indian half and raced 40 yards across the goal line. Another touch down came when Bradley received beau tiful pass in the second quarter that netted 20 yards and touchdown. Long runs by Rhame and McCurry and the line pluHging of Chewing and Dempsey featured Furman’s Of fensive. The latter, playing the first football game of his life, surprised the spectators with the terrific man ner in which he hit the line. Captain MeManaway generalled his team we’ll and ran with the ball in good style. Mcleod played, perhaps, the greatest game Of his life in the line and kicked nine goals from the touchdown. The best work for Newberry was done by McPhee, who made most of the gains that were made by the Indians. c.. Borts and G. Borts played well.
