MARYLAND SPRINGS SURPRISE IN NORTH Defeats Strong Syracuse Eleven by 10 to 7; Holding Big Team at Bay. SYRACUSE. n. Y, Nov. 14r-Mary. land University is counting its foot ball season a huge success today. The victorious eleven over Syracuse Is expected in Washington late tonight and will be given royal welcome at College Park. The defeat of Syracuse University here yesterday by a 10 to score was a distinct surprise to the Salt City collegians as well as the footbali world in general. While Syracuse scored twenty first downs to but three for the Maryland lads the victorious tide went in favor of the College Park men because they used their. heads, took advantage OF the breaks, and displayed, in Brewer, one of the most sensational runners and punters> seen in the North this season. Brewer was called upon repeatedly to kick and his long spirals went from forty-five> to sixty-fve and seventy yards. Added to his, Brewers ability to run back punts left the margin in favor of his eleven. Groves ran the team with excellent judgement and with Brewer, Mack ert, and Plassnig backing him up got considerable support. The game was but three minutes old before Mackert grabbed a tumble and raced thirty-fve yards for touchdown. In the first period Syracuse also scored, Kellogg going around end for touchdown. Brewers drop-kick from a difficult angle won the game for Maryland in the first quarter. There was no scoring in the second half although Syracuse outrushed the visiting Marylanders.

MARYLAND Eleven Defeats Syracuse BY Score of l0--7 SYRACUSE, N. Y, Nov. 13.-syracuse University’s erratic football team was handed 10 to defeat by the plucky Maryland State eleven in Arch bold Stadium this afternoon. The Mary landers entered the fray full of pep and fight and three minutes after plav began Plassnig grabbed up the bail when Abbott fumbled and raced thirty yards for a touchdown Syracuse came back five minutes later when Kellogg tore off thirty y-five-yard run around the end for a touchdown. but just before the whistle blew Half Back Brewer kicked field goal, again putting his team in the lead. During the remaining periods Maryland played an entirely defensive game and aided by Brewers sensational punts held the Orange scoreless. Brewers exhibition of punting was about the finest ever seen here. His kicks averaged sixty to seventy yards and it was due to his ability to get them away that for the last three sessions the ball was in Syracuse territory about three -fourths of the time. Fumbles by Syracuse at critical periods and poor generalship wrecked several rosy chances to score. The line-up:
