Special Despatch to THE NEW YoHK HERALD. FRANKLIN FIELD, PHILApELPHIA, Nov. 6.--Only Tom Davies prevented Penn from beating Pitt to-day. The Panthers’ elusive halfback virtually won the game single handed for Glenn Warmers team, 27 70 21. He scored three touchdowns and kicked three goals for a total of 21 points. without Davies to-day the Panthers would have been downed for the first time since the series started. Daviess first feat was late In the sec ond period. when he caught Harvey’s kick off when the score was tied at II and raced eighty-four yards to the goal line. 1t was the second straight Saturday that an opposing back has pulled the trick on Franklin Field. Last week Hinkey Haines of State raced ninety yards 10 the goal line. In the third period Davies, with two sensational runs--one of twenty-five yards and the other of five-scored a touch down, and then, TO cap the climax, in the fourth period. when Penn had Pitt on the run with an aerial attack. Davies intercepted a Straus forward pass on his own 40 yard line and sprinted sixty yards to the goal line In the dying minutes OF the game Wray shot a long forward pass to Carl Ertresvaag. who caught the ball on the goal line for touchdown. Ertresvaag had replaced Capt Hopper only few plays earlier. When it was almost dark Penn opened up again and marched down the field, where Straus heaved long pass to Ertresvaag on the goal line again. 1t was a thrilling play and brought the Red and Blue stands to their feet. Touchdown Well Enrred. Penn’s first touchdown in the open ing period was well earned. The Quaiers took the ball at midfield and fC und big holes in the Panthers’ line. Thomas and Wray gained on most every play the former hitting the line for four and five yards at clip. Forward passes also helped In the pro cession, and finally Wray arched one to Thomas. who caught the ball a foot from the goal line and took one step over for the first touchdown made by the Quakers against Pitt since 1915. Penn outgained Pitt and but for Davies’s sensational playing would have t’!rned the Panthers back with their first defeat of the year. Coach Warner was obliged to call on Holleran, his star quarterback. in the second period. The lad made the Pan second period. when he took forward pass from Davies back of the goal line. Penn waited until the last period to put Joe Straus in the back1eld. He was lmpine when ha went out on the field. but speeded I’D the Red and Blue attack with his long forward pass. More than $4,000 persons saw this game, which was the most thrilling 0! the year

Sensational Playing Of Davies Helps Pitt to Whip Penn, 27–21 Captain of Panthers Inter. cepts Pass and Runs 90 Yards for Touchdown PHILADELPHIA, Nov e.-Captain Davies of the University Of Pittsburgh team alone was responsible for the victory Of the Panthers over Pennsylvania On Franklin Field this afternoon The twice-deieated Penn team sue cumbed by the score Of 81 to 21. But for Davies’s individual brllianoe and his last-minute dash for a touchdown, on an intercepted forward pass Penn would have won. Pltt entered the fourth period with a lead Of 20 to 7. Penn made a touch down on the first play on brilliant forward pass to Wray. The Red and Blue then began to bang away at the Pitt goal liAe with short dashes and snappy forward passes. 1t looked like another Red and Blue score and a chance to win, FOR Captain Davies had missed the goal from touchdown after mis- teams third score Joe Straus, the big Penn fullback who had been on the side lines all day was called into the fray. On his frs+ forward pass Davies came dashinp uu the field, leaped into the air, caught the pail and ran sixty yards for a touch down. This apparently sealed the game, but the game Quaker eleven came Dack with attack consisting mainly o. forward passes, that produced a ninety yard consecutive advance and 81 touch down just before the game ended. Aside from his brilliant dash on the intercepted forward pass, Davies did ABOUT all the playing for his team. In the second period he caught kickoff and ran through the whole Penn team Tor a touchdown, carrying the ball eighty-eight yards. A little later he took punt on his own 4O-yard line and after running it back thirty-tive yards proceeded, in two smashes at the me- to cover tnirty-tive more yards and scoring touchdown. In addition to this, Davies contsibuted numerous fine runs from form, a. tlon and on punts, and did all the klcklng Tor his team. The rest Of the fltt team was completely overshadowed by his work and gave a mediocre performance Penn completely mastered the Pan tners with their aerial attack, and in addition showed consistent running game, great gameness and a good de- 1ehse. Penn gained more ground from scrlmmage than Pitt, with las wards against 142 yards. In forward pass ing Penn’s superiority was clearly determined. The Quakers hurled twelve successful passes, gaining on them a distance of l42 yards, while Pitt only twice was successful with this game Tor twenty-three yards Rex Wray and Joe Straus slightly outpunted Davies.
