HOW CENTRE LOST To- GEORGIA TECH Diftiest Branrs of Football Ever Seen Was Played BY Atlanta Eleven Hundreds of admirers of Centre j Colleges great football team were stunned by the overwhelming defeat they met at Atlanta Saturday, when Georgia. Tech. beat them % to O.. However, few expected them to put up n game indicative of their real qualities only a week after their gruelling battle at Harvard. Newspaper men who saw the game at Atlanta. however,, tell story which shows what the KentuckianS were up against-the dirtiest brand. of football ever seen in the south. Bruce Dudley, sporting editor of hte Louisville Herald, writes this kind of game that the Georgians played: | Centres engagement Saturday with called q football game, for it was not. Centre lost by 4 decisive margin. The score was “a to o. The story of the defeat Will not be an alibi. Centre despises alibis and so do all lovers of clean sport. An alibi an insult to a sterling football team; excuses are to be frowned on in foot ball history. Centre did not play the brand of sport which went under the guise of football Saturday afternoon at Grant Field and lost. Refer ring to the mess as football is to smilch the name of the countfy’s greatest collegiate sport. A number of Atlanta newspaper men interviewed McMillin after the encounter ‘Do you think Centre would have been able to have beaten Tech. last Saturday,” they asked. ‘‘Afterseeing the Find of football Tech. plays, | doubt it very much” McMillin replied. “I don’t see how any football team in the world could hope to beat Tech. at Grant Filed if Tech used the kind of tactics it used this afternoon” “Would you be willing to play Tech. again ?” 4 Eyes” snapped Bo. “I’d give every thing own to play them again tomorrow” “The Centre team today” he added ‘‘was only about 20 per cent as eff;cient as the Centre team which match ell wits and speed and weight with Harvard last Saturday. But pray, do not make the mistake of believing that | make this statement to account for our defeat. We We’re beaten and beaten badly, but no one knows bet ter than you that we We’re not beaten fairly. Gentlemen, it is bad sportsman ship is most cases to say anything against triumphant team, but just want to say that / can’t understand how the people of Atlanta can sup port football team which resorts tel such dirty and despicable tactics rs the Tech. team used against us this afternoon. The Centre team was warned by dozens and dozens of southern fans familiar with Techs | style of play to look out for unfair methods, but we paid no attention to the warnings. We believed that any college team in this civilized age could not be guilty of offenses which We’re charged This is all have to say except that it is my sincerest wish that again may be permitted to play against Georgia Tech.’‘ “We’re not going to squeal one tiny Bit” vouched Uncle Charley Moran. eve came down here to play foot ball, but everything but football was unfolded. Va. tonight FOR this after noon the green sweatcred praying colonels” Of Centre College went down TO defeat before Georgia Tech by the scoro OF “a 10 O. II was by no means a brilliant game. Both teams did their everlasting best 10 give the game TO the other in the first half 1t was only In the last half that Tech. really got down TO work and started playing ball. For the first two quarters Tech and Centre fumblod repeatedly To show just how bad they were and how much they resembled prep teams instead OF big college contestants IL Is only necessary to say that on two kickoffs Flowers, for Georgia Tech. did not kick further than 10 yards Maybe il was intentional, but any way Tech was hurt as the result. Georgia Tech was on the field first and received a great ovation. Half an -Four after the scheduled time 10 start the crippled Centre players came on the field, wrapped IN their green sweaters and escorted by four pretty girls. who COX their position on the eide lines. something done for tho first time on tho local field. Maybe the Colonies prayed before tho game began. but anyway u lidn’t do them the slightest bit of good. Tanner was about the only man on Centre who showed major league calibre. Mcmillan proved the very worst flzzle for a star Atlanta has ever seen. Not a single long run did he get away with he fumbled at times when clean playing would have Noted gains. and his defensive work was mediocre. Centre began the game minus the scr vices OF chinn. Weaver and Roberts, but before the finish all three stars were H. and doing good work. though showing the effects of wear and tear. Techs hrst score came by tho goal from field route, n tumble by Whitnel giving Tech the ball on the 26yard line IN the frst quarter, and Flowers put ting the ball between the goal posts. Then Toch scored again late In the second half when Ped Barron went around right end for “A 6oyard run, lodging man after man and leaving Me- MILAN tied at the post.
