Oct. 23.--Washingtor and Jefferson battled through fifty tour minutes OF hard football here this afternoon. defeating Lehigh by IA to 0, the scores coming through the medium Of two touchdowns and the kicking of the resultant goals. Both Washington and Jefferson scores were made in the third period, one by Erickson. the haifback, who crossed the goal line on a nineteen yard sprint after the most consistent attack Of the day for the Presidents. and the other by Loucks. right end, who scooped up loose bail and darted dis tance Of forty-fve yards down the field. The tumble made by Rote, quarterback of Lehigh. was due to vicious tackle by Stein. who hit the Lehigh midget so hard that the bali was jerlked out of his arms. Washington and Jefferson played bet ter football than It did week ago. and Was opposed by the best eleven 1t has met this year. At the same time, with the exception of the one scoring period. It lacked cohesion In It’s attack. Lelligh never had chance to score. The only time 1t had the ball near it’s opponents goal was in the last half minute OF play, when a forward pass carried is to the so yard line. 1t was in this period that Lehigh flashed its only defensive strength displayed during the afternoon. 1t used q long forward pas twice for good gains. one of nineteen yards and the other Of twenty yards. Both teams played good defensive ball most OF the way. although In the third period the Presidents managed to pierce the Lehigh line for substantial gains. Brenkert, who went in at fullback for w. and J. at the beginning of the second half, was responsible for the first touch down through two brilliant runs Off tackle. He slipped his way along the Lehigh tacklers like a flash and on his second journey was within nineteen yards of the opposing goal before he was halted. Erickson, who had tried several times to utilize his great speed in a run at the ends without success. then made his best advance Of the after noon. He went around the kehigh left end on terrific gallop. was almost downed twice. but managed finally to shoot over the line, Garbisch kicking the goal The second touchdown was made within a few moments. Both teams had punted twice and Eielson sent high spiral to Rote, who stood on his As yard line. Tho whole w. and J. team was uoWH Oh MIN ike a udSn, out stem reached him first. Just as the Lehie] quarterback caught the ball Stein hit him like an avalanche. The ball was seen to jerk completely out of Rotes arms and a mad scramble for 1t ensued. but Right End Loucks gathered up the oval while going almost at full speed, and then. with the other w. and ]. players taking out opposing tacklers, he went sailing down the field for his score Garbisch easily kicked this goal. W. and ]. made four first downs In the first period. but 1t marred its chances of scoring by fumbling. West lost tho hall on the first play, and again Erickson dropped the ball after cat ching q punt and when it seemed that he was en- his way TO the goal. The Presidents fumbled more or less sll through the contest, while Leiiigh handled the ball much more Clearly. Lehigh seemed to play with more dash ir its backheld than the Presidents Its men ran hard with the ball, but tho w. and j. line and ends were too much for them. hurting them back most of the time. Lehigh seemed to have more success with its forward pass attack, which 1t loosed In the final period. The lineup:
