Blue FIGHTERS HOLD K. .. Breaks Gave Kansas 6 to o Victory Over Washburn Saturday. Fighting like wildcats the Wash burn football team held Kansas uni versity to a to score Saturday aft ernoon on McCook field at Lawrence. The game was in doubt until the last minute, a1tho most of the playing was in Washburn’s territory. After hold ing the Crimson and Blue team for three periods, the Washburn line weakened in the final few minutes of play and Little, a substitute Kansas back, carried the ball over the goal line for a touchdown. The injury to Irwin, Washburn’s crack center. weak ened the Blue line and after he was carried off the field repeated gains were made thru the middle of the Ichabod line. Breaks to Jayhawkers. Every break in the game went to Kansas. In the first two quarters numerous fumbles were made by both teams and all of them were recovered by the Jayhawkers. Another time a tumble was made by a K. U. back and a Washburn man picked up the ball and raced forty yards for touch down, but the referees whistle had blown, putting the ball out of play, and the score didn’t count. Another time Kansas punted and Captain Stew ems of Washburn, playing safety, thought the ball would go over the goal line, but it stopped on the one yard line and the Blue were forced to punt from behind their own goal line. Never has a Washburn team fought any harder than did Coach Ream’s men Saturday. Some OF the linemen, bruised and battered, could hardly get to their feet to stop the Kansas offensive, yet they refused 10 leave the field and fought as only a real team can fight for their college. Captain Nettels. Vaudeville and WEIGH performed brilliantly for Kansas ana Ionborg at quarter also showed well for the Crimson and Blue. Cossman. Wykoff, Simpson Star. It would be impossible to name the man who played the best for WASH burne because there wasn’t a man on the Blue team who didn’t give all he had. Rusty Cossman worked like truck horse at tackle, repeatedly breaking thru and downing the Kan sas back field before they got under way. Wykoff looked like a million dollars. This young athlete was eyerywhere and on the bottom OF every pile. He backed the Blue line like big Lacquer and sifted thru the X. u. line time otter time and threw the runner for a loss. Punk” Simpson did great work in the line opening holes for his backs and his defensive play was some of the best ever seen on McCook field. Captain Stevens handled all of the Kansas punts in fine shape and encouraged his men with words of cheer when it looked as If they might be weakening. Big Washburn Crowd. A large crowd of people saw the game and the cheering sections OF both Kansas and Washburn rooters kept things lively. A daring aviator did stunts over the IleloS DeIoIe 1H0 whistle blew.
