VANDY SURPRISED. Vanderbilt was given one Of the rudeSt jolts Of its long career Saturday when the supposedly weak University of Tennessee team held the Nc. Gugin machine to n 3–3 deadlock on Dudley field. The Commodores had fig. ured on romping on the Tennessee out tit, but the eleven that faced Vandy Saturday was quite different from the decrepit bunch that had been pictured by the Tennessee critics. Josh Cody managed to get a field goal, which was all that Vandy could compile. Hatcher, Tennessee’s ace. was able TO tie the count in the last period when he got a goal from placement. Both teams played hard in an effort TO score a touchdown, but were unable TO penetrate the others defense. Coach John r, Bender Of Tennessee showed that his machine Is In for a good season, for holding Nandy SO strength as wen as class embodied In the athletes now wearing the m~oleskins Of the Orange and White, Several Memphis boys were seen in action In the Saturday melee of Vandy and Tennessee. on the Gold and Black eleven were Swayne Latham and N, W, Sherman, both OF Memphis and both quarter backs, Latham started the game and was relieved by sherman after futile attempts to gain against the stonewall defense offered by the Tennesseans. Willis McCahe, Jim Bradford and Hunter Lane were the Bluff Citians who performed with the Orange and White and who scintlllated on the Nash Vile gridiron. This trio has added considerable strength to the Bender lineup and great things are expected OF them before the season has been finished. = Georgia Tech encountered more opposition than Coach Helsman had anticipated In Clemson college and not until the second half could the Golden Tor nado get going, The Clemson team held Tech scoreless for the first half, but In the final pair Of periods, the Heismen got busy and piled UP rs points, at the same time keeping tho Clemsonians at bay. Bill Fincher was the Tech star, kicking four goals after the touchdowns had been made. - Tulane, New Orleans entry in the gridiron derby, had Il big walkover In its game with Southwestern Louisiana university, piling up rs points on It’s opponent. Tulane got out In front early, and substitutes we’re rushed In at the beginning Of the second half, the game finishing with an entirely differ ent team than the one which started for Tulane.

Our ithaca correspondent reports that mere Is much wagering going on in down town Ithaca on the result of the Colgate-Cornell tilt. with the Hamilton Institution holding a Z to 10 advantage in the gaming. Colgate long has been able to give Cornell more than a bat ia and with another excellent machine IN prospect this year Maroon alumni ara ralfying to the support of their eleven with bundles OF money. Last Saturday in Pittsburg, in the face Of a drizzling rain, 81 900 persons trooped out to Forbes Field to see the University Of Pittsburg defeat West Virgtnia, rs to o. For reasons best known out West the Mountain eleven had acqrfrcd an early season reputation that far eroeeded It’s actual ability. but even 20, the crowd was the largest that ever witnessed an opening game of football anywhere In the United States It is expected that the capacity of Forbes Field win be taxed to its utmost when Georgia Tech plays in Pittsburg on October rs. Vanderbilt, smartins under the sting Of 3 to 3 tie game with the University Of Tennessee last week. will go down 10 Atlanta Tomorrow 10 battle the Tech eleven. In view of the comparative showing of the two teams, Vanderbilt is not conceded a chance, but Commodore supporters are depending on the wiEardry of Dan McGugin to turn al most certain overwhelming defeat into at least a respectable showing, At the start OF the season Vanderbilt, with many stars back from the service, was a heavy favorite over Tech. Protests have been made regarding the reporting OF last Saturdays Lehigh game with Rutgers. which Lehigh won by 10 to 0. Many correspondents failed to find a detailed account of the story, hence complain about the lack of inter est in Lehigh. Owing to a storm wire ~ Connection was poor and the game was not received In time for the early editons which most Lehigh followers apparently obtained
