BaraII Makes Only Touch. down, of Game on 15-Yard Run After Double Pass. | Maryland States foot bail team defeated New York University yesterday at College Park by the score Of 6 to 2. State scored a touchdown about midway Of the second quarter, from which Gurev1ch failed to pick | goal and the winners were forced to q safety in the final period, when Knode fumbled high pass by Myers behind the line and then fell on the ball. State outplayed the visiting team from beginning to the end of a game that was interesting not alone from its closeness. but from the standpoint of play. While bad foot ball was mixed with the good, there was enough of the commendable brand. especially on the defensive. to suit the gridiron critics as well as the mere fan. State made nine first downs during the contest to two for New York Uni versity, both Of the latters coming on forward passes, which were used freely by the losers in the closing stages Of the game in a desperate ef- fort to score. States touchdown was due to a great punt, by Bobby Knode and a clever dash around right end by Bara1l on double pass. Baralrs winning had been In as a substitute for Knode. Previous to these two factors, which | brought the score, exchanges of punts were the rule. neither side showing a consistent punch. Knode Makes Long Punt. .Knode’s punt that led to the win | ming points carried IS yards from the line OF scrimmage in Maryland States After failing to gain on two attempts at rushing, New. York kicked, the bail | going out Of bounds on it’s 15-yard mark. State did nothing on its next two plays. Then Barall was sent in and he turned the scoring trick. | Before the first half ended State | again had the ball on New York’s 15yard line, but the visitors intercepted forward pass and came pretty near getting away to a touchdown. This portion Of the contest. They were in States territory much Of the time late ! in the game, but could not gain on rushing and had their attempts at | forward passes broken. They got only close enough once to force State to punt from behind its goal. Then Myers and Barall failed to team up properly and gave the visitors their | two points. When the final whistle was blown State was rapidly rushing the | ball toward New York’s goal. Both teams showed better on the defense than the offense, but States | backs got more help from the lineman | than did New York’s carriers Of the ! ball. New York, in fact, had a good alone Bosley and Gurevich did most of States ground gaining, the former twice getting away to 20-yard gains. Coster did especially good defensive work for State.
