Pitt Wins Close Football Game From w. andJ. PITTSBURGH, Nov. 1o.-The foot ball game to-day between the University Of Pittsburgh and Washington and jefferson College was the hardest played and most spectacular Of the season, and, in fact, not for three years has the Blue and Gold been put to such a test as that given it by the Red and Black machine put together by Sol Metzger. The score was 13 TO 10 in favor Of Pitt, which, by strange coincidence is the same as Pitt lost to W. and }. by three years ago to-day. since when time Glenn Warner has not tasted the bitter dregs of defeat. Evenly Matched The two teams were about evenly matched. but the Washington boys showed the best stamina, for in the second half they outplayed the Blue and Gold and came perilously near to tieing the score. They also made a noble stand within the shadow Of their goal posts in the last period, holding Pitt on downs on their one-yard line. Their line-hitting was little weaker than Blue and Gold, but they excelled in aerial work, making several sub stantial gains on forward passing. The Red and Black was the first to score. the tally coming seven minutes after the game began. W. and j. kicked off. but Pitt was unable to get away with the ball, and was forced to kick As the w. and ]. men faced the fourth down with five yards to gain, they elected 10 punt, McCreight having little the edge on McLaren in this departmert of the game. McLaren fumbled at bad time, and when the Red and Black made a head way against the Warner machine, Nc Creight decided to try for a field goal from the 25-yard line and succeeded for the first score of the game. This woke up the Panthers, and they began a series of line smashes, with McLaren and Easterday carrying the ball, that wi.hered the Red and Black, and Foxy Miller ran around the left end for a touchdown, which Gougler converted into a goal. In the second period the local team kept up its good work, Gougler, Nc Laren and Miller being used at centre smashes and end runs until the 2-yard line was reached. McLaren was then pushed over for the second touchdown Gougler failed at goal, and the score was 13 to 3. Pitt had only one more chance TO score, in the fourth period, but the Red and Black line held like a stone wall and got the ball on downs on the 1-yard line. Pitt Line Hammered A different looking team came out Of the dressing room after the interval, dressed in red and black hose, and soon began to hammer the Pitt line until the hopes Of the several hundred w. and j. students scared high. Nc Creight, Stobbs and Tressel went through repeatedly, and finally the for mer got the ball on fake pass and ran thirty-fve yards until he had placed the ball on Pitts l2-yard line. A short forward pass put the sphere on the 3-yard line and the next mass play pushed Stobbs over for the only | touchdown scored by the Washington boys. Captain McCreight kicked goal The last period was desperately played by both sides, the Red and Black / making substantial gains on aerial work, while Pitt was on the defensive all the time, except just before the / whistle blew, when il carried the ball / TO W. and Us lyard line, where the visitors made their famous stand. McCreight made another good try + for a field goal that would have tied / the score, but the ball went under the / bar and a moment later the game / ended. The line-up.
