MARYLAND STATE BEATS OLD RIVAL Takes Measure of st. Johns in Annual Grid Struggle by 13 to 3. CONTEST is HARD FOUGHT Unable to score in the first three periods of its annual grid iron struggle with St. Johns yes terday at College Park, Mary land State twice battered its way across the goal line in the fourth and won by Is to 3. State went into the fourth period with the score 5 to o against it, but the Annapolis eleven was unable to stand the gruelling pace and crumbled in the closing minutes of play. St. Johns gave the COT lege Park eleven real struggle, so real that it looked for a time as if it might win, but it took much the same kind of beating in so doing that a boxer would If he led against a better man IN the early rounds through sheer aggressiveness and fighting quail tiles. Better physical condition of the State players was brg factor, and when they started driving desperately in the closing moments of the game tor the score needed to attain victory st. Iolln’s could not hold up. Game Full of Interest. No more interesting game has neen played on the State College neIo IN Years. There were threats to score oy both teams early in the contest. LOT of ground was gained before the contest was many minutes olo. YET liz first half ended with neither team nav ipr a noint to it’s credit. ST. Jonh b famed for its use of the forward pass, devoted almost it’s sole attention TO the running game. 1t did not ry forward pass in the first half; in ms third quarter its. only at aeteinp nnrnniete one during the day. State tried enIee passes One was incomplete, anosnes gained about 20 yards and she ehiio gained about 8. During the first three quarters ot the game State played sluggish foos ball, while st. Johns was on its toss hehting for every possible advantase’ There were times when 81 1onh -. ried the ball half the length OF tne field. but always when the plgskln was driven down into danger territoIy the College Park men seemed aple % have the facility to stop the aavancst’ g. Right at the start of the contest ss Johns showed exceptional onensise strength by hammtring the State iine: after receiving the kickoff, straight down the field to the l-yard line. lhe Annapolis men looked to be In Tor q touchdown right off the reel. but tne Old Gold and Black players braeed on their own goal line and hurled PACK four charges OF their epponemI; nnI;: eleven able to get inside the ~ ward line Once near the end OF tno third quarter. the visitors rushea tne ball 40 yards from their own Terri tory to states 2o-yard line. but were held and Semler dropped back ana booted a perfect drop kick between the bars for the only score OF the game up until that time. st. johns stuoenIs went wild. because it was the first time since 1912 that one of their elevens had been ahead Of State in any game State Loses Its Punch. Several times in the first half State arted to gain consistently, but when is got down in st. Johns territory cIu.1 1 across. In the first quarter II was on ST; :John’s seyen-yard line and in the second quarter it had the collegians on the defensive on their own ten1yard ta line ,ine. s,s,. 81 in the third quarter, brilliant gains oy Pdasniz featuring. The fourth quarter was ali States st. Johns began to sue cumb to the hammering 1t had been reon the thirty-yard line the State crowd started pounding its way touchdownwaru. It was steady march until Fietcher drove his way through the 81. n, J9nn lo .oaarated the ball from the goal shorty after that St. Johns began to throw forward passes Unfortunately in its own territory and lost the ball on downs on its thirty-five yard line. State started an other march to the goal line and. though it got flfteen-yard penalty as a setback during the trip. ffteen-yard run by Snyder made up the distance with the bali down four yards from its goal. st. Johns covered Fletcher and stopped him dead on the first play. but on the next Arthur took the oval across. knode kicked the first goal but missed the second. st. Johns Fights Hard. With the exception of the last quarter. when State started something that looked like real foot ball. about all the fighting done in the game belongs to the credit Of St. Johns. The An foot ball and some of its men did splendid work. Pfasnig was the only man in the visiting backfield who could gain ground consistently, and II his performance of today. when he ripped off long gains through the State for wards, is any criterion, there is no better back in Maryland. Fletcher did the most of the ground gaining for state. He and Knode ran back punts much better than the visitors. With these exceptions there was little in the way of feature to States play Immediately after the game the ball with which the victory was won was presented to DIR. w. w. Skinner. an alumnus of the college who is menu ber of the board of trustees. DIR. Skim ner played quarterback on the first state College team to meet ST. Johns back in 1892. Lineup and summary: sto+.
