B|G GE[EVENS SHOW. STRENGTH OF PLAY Some Run Up High Scores on Weaker Teams, Others in Close Struggles. CORNELL is IMPROVING show power in contests with weak elevens, and in games IN which hey were opposed Pitts burgh, Georgia Tech and Navy ran up big counts, while Brown and Syracuse fought an almost even struggle and West Virginia and Rutgers battled to tie. Out in the middle west Michigan ran up big score, Chicago and Illinois played o to 0 and Wisconsin surprised Minnesota by beat-ing that team by a field goal margin. Pittsburgh was content to win its game by a margin of only four touchdowns, but Georgia Tech and Navy gave the teams they faced awful lacings. The Crack ers trounced Vanderbilt. which has turned out some fine teams at times, by 50 to 0, and Navy ran up o5 points against Western Reserve. Navy is the only one of these three elevens defeated this season, having lost to West Virginia in a game in which West Virginia was outplayed. !, Worthy Antagonists Play. Syracuse-Brown and West virginias Rutgers games proved that the oppose ing teams were worthy antagonfsta. Syracuse beat Brown by to 0, though reports show it to have outplayed the Providence eleven by greater margin. West Virginia and Rutgers did exactly what they did year ago. each finishing the contest with one TOUCHDOWN Big, powerful elevens. they brought out some of the best foot ball Of the year. which these four institutions took paft that they have to regret. Out in the middle west Michigan gave Kalamazoo College 62-to-0 beating. The Wolverines continued to show the driving. slashing offense that has char acterized their play all season ana which week ago counted for three touchdowns against Eehra ska. Mscha-, gan, despite the loss OF five yeterapQ ! Of last years eleven because OF t&9 war. seems to be more steady and powerful than in any of the last Ave or six seasons. At least that is the tAs preston one would gain by considef1S tion of the big scores 1t is running up. Chicago and Illinois fought througo scoreless battle, while Wiscon8to whipped Minnesota for the first time IN obtained by the narrow margin OF . goal from the field, each Of the teatnD getting a touchdown. Army Defeat May Surprise. Notre Dame in all probability somes what surprised lot of people by beat< Ing the Army. to 2. although 1t was aggregation had been making a nnos showing Notwithstanding the disa4-. vantages of the long trips they had been taking. Incidentally. 1t might be has travelled farther this fall for itD games than any other eleven In the east or middle west. 1t went to Madison. Wis, to play University of Wisconsin and to Lincoln, Neb., to meet t1sosx1 versity of Nebraska, and yesterday NJ took the journey to West Point. Trav. cling that far for many contests would not leave the players much time tor Ohio State University continued its march toward another victorious season by trouncing Indiana University by rs to g. Chick Harley and his ~. the teams they come in contact with, Ohio State ia winning its games by such big margins that there can bo no doubt as to its power and versatile ity. Cornell showed signs of considerable improvement in its game with Car. negie Tech. The Ithacans broke down the defense % Of no,nta the b not scored on. Sharpe’s men must have played better foot ball than usual because Carnegie Tech has a team that is not to be taken lightly by any OPP ponent. Pennsylvania had little trou- BILE getting away with Lafayette. the score being 81 TO o. Teams coached by day affair probably will be something really worth while after all. Colgate. following it’s defeat of last week by Brown. broke loose against Holy Cross and won by 21 to Q. The New Yorkers had things all their own way from the start and the Massachus setts aggregation had little opportuni. are to be taken in full as criterions. Maryland Teams Defeated. - MARYLAND State. Johns Hopkins ana st. Johns. three Maryland elevens due to hook up in big games within The next four weeks, went down to defeat, State was heaten in a fine struggle By North Carolina.
